An Agreement with the UN to Combat Organized Crime

Libya and the UN Agency for Combating Drugs and Organized Crime signed an agreement to open a regional office in Tripoli to combat drugs and organized crime in the Arab Maghreb region. The UN regional office will provide technical support to countries in the region to combat organized crime, drug smuggling, trafficking in persons, corruption and money laundering. The executive director of the UN Agency said that drug smuggling and trafficking in persons are on the rise in the Arab Maghreb countries. Libya pledged to pay $6 million as a first payment to finance the launch of this regional office, however, the opening date was not announced.
