Demands for Disclosure of the Possessions of Officials

Iraq - Thursday, March 26, 2009

Iraqi parliamentary and political blocs demanded the disclosure of monetary wealth possessed by state officials, including officials in Kurdistan Region. The demands follow prime minister's Nouri Al-Maliki revealing that he possesses $427,000. The Iraqi National List Bloc asked the Integrity Commission and the Financial Audit Bureau to examine bank accounts of officials inside as well outside Iraq. The Bloc also called for re-activating the disclosure bill for parliament members received 2 years ago but suspended for political and technical reasons. A Kurdish parliament member asked for expansion of the central government's disclosure bill to cover officials in the Kurdish region. However, another Kurdish parliament member said it is impossible to do so and that the Kurdish region needs to establish its own integrity commission.
