High Ranking Officials Involved in Corruption

The Alliance for Integrity and Accountability (AMAN) which presents the branch of Transparency International in Palestinian territories announced that corruption is widespread in these areas and takes several forms: abuse of public jobs for personal interests, embezzlement of public funds, bribery, money laundering and legal deception. The Alliance said there are 13 corruption cases that involve persons who had occupied high executive jobs in the Palestinian Authority. These cases investigated since 2004 have not been settled yet. In 2007, a total of 128 corruption cases, 14 of which were classified as major cases, were investigated. Up to September 2008, investigated cases were 81. The director of the Alliance called on the Palestinian Authority to establish an independent anti-corruption body to be responsible for combating corruption and investigating cases of corruption.
